Lyrical Imagery, Oakland: Spoken Word Poetry & Visual Art Gallery

Returning to the Bay with Lyrical Imagery

After debuting the series in October 2015, Lyrical Opposition brought Lyrical Imagery back for its second installment—this time at the historic Joyce Gordon Gallery in Downtown Oakland. The event once again celebrated the meeting point of lyrical artistry and visual imagery, offering a vibrant platform where poets, emcees, musicians, and visual artists could inspire one another and create new possibilities for collaboration.

Visual Gallery & Community Showcase

The evening began at 7:00pm with a visual art gallery, where local artists filled the gallery walls with powerful, thought-provoking works. As the night unfolded, lyrical artists took the stage in an open mic showcase, blending acoustic music, spoken word, and hip-hop performances. This dual experience allowed attendees to walk among the art while also engaging in the energy of live performances—an atmosphere unique to the Lyrical Imagery series.

Free & Open to the Public

Consistent with Lyrical Opposition’s mission, the event was completely free and accessible to the community. The Joyce Gordon Gallery’s central Oakland location provided an ideal backdrop for fostering cross-cultural connections and supporting Bay Area artists. The open invitation drew a diverse crowd of creatives, activists, and art enthusiasts who came to celebrate the power of storytelling across two mediums.

A Platform for Collaboration

Lyrical Imagery is more than just an event series—it is an incubator for artistic collaboration. By bringing together visual artists and lyrical performers, the series nurtures opportunities for future partnerships, co-created projects, and shared community impact. The Joyce Gordon Gallery event highlighted the series’ growth since its inception and demonstrated the potential for expanding its reach throughout the Bay Area.

✨ The April 23rd edition of Lyrical Imagery at Joyce Gordon Gallery built upon the energy of the series’ debut, further establishing it as a cornerstone for creative collaboration in the Bay Area. With each gathering, the community of lyrical and visual artists grows stronger, continuing to transform art into a collective voice for change.

Last October, we've debuted our brand new series, Lyrical Imagery, an event series that merges both lyrical artistry with visual imagery. We'll be bringing it back again this month at the Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland, CA. There's beauty in both art forms and we want to create a positive platform for both to be highlighted and showcased. We strive to develop a community of lyrical and visual artists that can collaborate and potentially work together by storytelling through the two different mediums. Creating an environment for artist collaborations through connecting at our events, as well as attending our monthly workshops. Feel free to join us in the beginning stages of this process by either performing during our open mics we have periodically or displaying your visuals during our open art galleries!

This event is absolutely FREE to the community and public!

Visual artists will displaying their pieces at 7:00pm until the event has concluded. For those that want to highlight and display your work are highly encouraged to submit your entries to submit@lyricalopposition.org as soon as possible, due to space being very limited.
