California Arts Council Grantee: 2020-21 General Operating Support
We are incredibly grateful to the California Arts Council for investing in Lyrical Opposition and believing in the transformative power of the arts.
This support allows us to expand two initiatives that are at the heart of our mission:
🎤 Lyrical Academy will continue providing free artist development workshops focused on artistic writing, performance, and creative expression—equipping emerging artists with the skills and confidence to share their voices.
🎬 Artist Sustainability Program will provide artists with access to professional resources to record music, produce videos, create visual artwork, and build sustainable creative careers.
At Lyrical Opposition, we believe that artists are more than entertainers—they are educators, organizers, storytellers, and community leaders. Through our programs, we create spaces where creativity becomes a pathway to healing, liberation, and opportunity.
Whether it's through Lyrical Originals, where artists perform and connect with the community, Lyrical Studios, where creators gain access to equipment and production resources, Lyrical Academy, where emerging voices are nurtured, Lyrical Open, where creatives gather to collaborate, or Lyrical Vinyl, where artists find community and supplemental income, every part of our work is centered on helping artists thrive while strengthening our communities.
Thank you to the California Arts Council for making this work possible. We are also grateful to our artists, teaching artists, volunteers, partners, supporters, and community members who continue to believe in our vision. This investment is an investment in the next generation of artists, storytellers, and changemakers.
The work continues—and we're just getting started.

Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, LYRICAL OPPOSITION will (1) expand its Lyrical Academy to provide free artist development workshops in artistic writing and performance and (2) develop its Artist Sustainability Program, providing artists with the resources to record albums, produce videos, and create artwork to market their craft.
Organization Summary
Lyrical Opposition develops lyrical artists, activists and educators through personal and professional development. Lyrical Opposition also partners with communities of color in order to curate events centered around joy, liberation, and healing.
Lyrical Originals are curated artistic spaces, where Lyrical Opposition organizes events and platforms where artists, musicians, poets, and filmmakers can showcase their work and share messages of hope, empowerment, and social justice. These events are often admission-free, making them accessible to a wider audience.
Lyrical Studios is our physical space where we offer artists and filmmakers equipment and software use to create new works. We encourage and support artists who use their creative talents to raise awareness about social issues, challenge systemic oppression, and inspire positive change in their communities. Lyrical Opposition provides resources needed to thrive as a professional artist in the marketplace.
Lyrical Academy leads and engages in educational programs and workshops aimed at empowering individuals, particularly youth, to use creative expression as a tool for personal growth, self-expression, and advocacy.
Lyrical Open is a monthly open space for creatives to connect, collaborate and network with other artists and community members. Lyrical Opposition aims to create these spaces where people can come together, celebrate their creativity, and find solace and inspiration in the midst of challenging societal issues.
Lyrical Vinyl is a nonprofit record store that exists to serve as space for artists to work for supplemental income in between gigs and performances. As well as being a space in the community with the intent of preserving the arts and physical mediums.
